Should I drill a 1-5/8" hole for these letters? Just confirming.

The threaded skirt on the socket measures approximately 1.55 inches and the flange stop on the back of the lamp socket measures approximately 1.75 inches. You can use any bit between 1.56 - 1.7 inches. 1-5/8" should work OK.
