Yes, this can be used as a decorative cover plate behind an existing wall sconce, provided you choose a diameter that is larger than your 5-inch hole. Since your new fixture has a 4-1/2 inch backplate, selecting a 6 inch or larger backplate would fully cover the opening while providing a visible border around the fixture.
Please note that these backplates are intended as decorative mounting plates and are not designed to replace or modify the electrical junction box installation. Be sure there is adequate clearance for your fixture's mounting hardware and wiring when installing.
