The 8-inch measurement refers to the widest outside diameter of the shade, not the diameter of the opening that fits onto the lamp.
This student shade has a 7-inch fitter (neck), so it is designed to fit a 7-inch student shade holder. If your lamp has a 6-1/2 inch shade holder or base, this shade would not be a direct fit.
